Be aware how much energy you use, there are many energy efficient products on the market. These need not be expensive to buy and can significantly reduce bills. For example, energy saving bulbs last much longer and use a fifth of the energy of ordinary bulbs.

Some simple steps around the home can make a big difference. For example, make sure lights, TVs and radios are switched off when not in use. Shut appliances off at the plug rather than leave on standby. Lower the washing machine temperature and dry clothes outside if possible. Use eco-friendly products for cleaning and the minimum water needed when boiling the kettle. Reuse shopping bags and drinks bottles and recycle waste.

Consider household improvements, older houses can be draughty and cold. Good roof and wall insulation can save a large percentage on a household energy bill. Less costly measures can include using draught excluders, lagging pipes and sealing loose windows.

A further step to consider is investing in solar or wind power. These can reduce energy bills by up to fifty percent. There are cheaper, portable panels on the market too, good for charging phones, MP3s and other small items.

We don’t need to change our lives, a few small actions by each of us is all that is needed. These simple steps will not only save money and benefit health, but can make a significant difference to the future of our planet.
